Debate Mate is a national organisation that seeks to engage young people in current affairs and issues of interest. In addition to teaching students how to put across a point of view in an effective and constructive manner, the programme promotes and develops so called ‘soft’ skills and qualities such as teamwork , empathy and creativity. Furthermore, we have also noted a significant improvement in performance in subjects such as English for the students who take part.
At the launch event, our students were provided with the opportunity to make a floor speech and were spectators of a show debate exploring the motion ‘this house believes that junk food should be banned for young people.’
Debate Mate runs in school every Thursday lunch-time where our students are coached by a specialist mentor in debating techniques and strategies. We are now about to enter the competition stage, with the first round of the Urban Debate League taking place in January. We are always on the look-out for new members to join our successful team. If interested, please approach Mr Binns or Mrs Leeson and come along to one of our sessions.
